A graphic depicting the value of electricity in 2022 and 2012. The cost of electricity was about 10 cents in 2012. In 2022, the cost rose to 11 cents. Compared to other amenities like gasoline, milk, bread and housing, electricity rates continue to be affordable.

Take a look at the cost of common items in 2012 compared to 2022. Electricity remains a good value because of the values that public power stands on: reliability, safety and affordability.

  • The average cost of a gallon of gas was $3.59 in June 2012. In June 2022, that cost rose to $5.03.
  • A gallon of milk was $2.79 in 2012. Today, it costs $4.77.
  • A loaf of bread was $1.88 in 2012. In 2022, that cost rose to $2.54.
  • A median home price was $154,000 in 2012. In 2022, that price increased to $368,200.

The average Nebraska residential cost per kilowatt hour of electricity was about 10 cents in 2012. In 2020, that cost rose to just 11 cents (EIA two-year lagging). Public power remains a good value for Nebraska.
